Leading up to the introduction of the 2003-04 men’s and women’s basketball teams at midnight, Mountaineer fans had an opportunity to win some great prizes.
Women’s players Kate Bulger and Sherell Sowho teamed up with Patrick Beilein and Tyler Relph in a three-point shooting contest, and afterward the men’s team held a 10-minute scrimmage.
Brian Miller, 19, of Herndon, Va., admits he's pretty excited about this year’s basketball team.
“We’ve got D’or Fischer and that Relph guy who was Mr. New York, so we should be pretty good this year,” he said.
Danny Farkas, 20, of Clifton, N.J., says he decided to come over to the Coliseum and see the basketball team instead of being out with his friends tonight.
“I think we have a pretty good season to look forward to,” he said. “We’ve got a very young team that will get some experience as the season goes on. I’m going to be here for all of the games.”
Real practices for both teams begin tomorrow afternoon.
“We wanted to give you a little preview of the team before the start of the season,” West Virginia coach John Beilein told the crowd. “I just want everyone to be patient. We’re building this thing bit by bit. But if our preseason workouts are any indication of our work habits, then I think this year will be a great surprise for everybody.”
West Virginia opens the 2003-04 season on the road at James Madison on Monday, Nov. 24. WVU’s home opener is against Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 29, following WVU’s home football game against Temple.
Basketball season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME.
The ticket office is open Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm.
