MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team (4-7-2) fell to Virginia (7-5-0) Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2-1 off of two late goals by the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va.
The Mountaineer offense once again sputtered early, getting off only two shots in the first half. However, the Mountaineer defense turned away all of the Cavaliers eight first half shots keeping the score knotted at 0-0 going into the second period.
In the 79th minute senior Rusty Girton would put WVU on top 1-0 with a shot off of a free kick. The goal marked Girton's first goal of the season and only the second of his collegiate career.
Less than a minute later UVA would storm back to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Adam Christman got free inside the penalty box and scored his team leading fifth goal of the season off of a one-time shot past goalkeeper Nick Noble.
The Cavaliers kept pressure on WVU and sidestepped an overtime match with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Mike Littlefield and Zane Hill put together two crosses to set up junior defender Jeff Tuman for a header that found its way into the back of the net. The goal was Tuman's second on the season.
Noble tallied four saves in the match while UVA goalkeeper Ryan Burke stopped three shots.
The Mountaineers return home to face BIG EAST rival No. 19 Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex is set for 1 p.m.
