MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team (4-6-2) heads to Charlottesville, Va., Wednesday, Oct. 15, for a pivotal match against Virginia (6-5-0).
The Cavaliers are coming off of a big 3-2 home win against ACC conference rival Clemson. Freshman midfielder Will Hall scored with just 3:58 remaining in the match to advance UVA's conference record to 3-1-0.
Junior Mike Littlefield and freshman Adam Cristman head the offense for the Cavaliers. Both have earned eight points so far this season, but in different ways. While Cristman has tallied four goals in his first 11 collegiate games Littlefield has helped the team by assisting on four goals and scoring two.
Another freshman, Ryan Best, has held down the goalkeeper position so far this season. The Williamstown, N.J., native has allowed 11 goals in eight starts (1.45 GAA) and has recorded 20 saves and three shutouts.
The UVA fans could prove to be a factor as well as they average 1,626 per home match.
The squad will have to rely on the trio of Jarrod Smith, Devon McTavish, and Aaron Pitchkolan to ignite the offense. The three players have accounted for nine of the team's ten goals and 77 of the squads 155 shots.
A constant for the 2003 Mountaineers has been the stellar play of the defense and freshman goalkeeper Nick Noble. Noble enters Wednesday's match having allowed only six goals in nine games. His .70 GAA is good enough to rank him second in the BIG EAST.
The men return home on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they host Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
