Seton Hall thrived in the role of underdog last season, posting a 17-13 record including a 10-6 mark in Big East play that should have been enough to get them into the NCAA tournament.
This season, Louis Orr’s team will not have the luxury of operating in stealth. Seton Hall is the only team in the Big East this year returning three players averaging double figures: point guard Andre Barrett (16.7 ppg.), swingman guard John Allen (13.9 ppg.) and power forward Kelly Whitney (11.0 ppg.).
Barrett runs the club and came on in a big way last year, earned second team all-conference honors. Allen is a good mid-range shooter who pairs nicely with 6-foot-6 forward Marcus Toney-El, who averaged 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a junior last season.
And 6-foot-6 Andre Sweet gives Orr a nice player off the bench. The former Duke transfer averaged 8.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last year season and is eyeing the lone open spot in this year’s starting lineup.
Newcomers Grant Billmeier, Jamar Nutter and Manny Messy will also get consideration for playing time.
Seton Hall plays one of the toughest schedules in the Big East with games against Purdue, Louisville, Ohio State and DePaul. Those four games give the Pirates more than enough of an opportunity to change its postseason fate this year.
