MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – West Virginia University's gymnastics team lost to host No. 21 Central Michigan, 193.725-192.275, Sunday afternoon at Rose Arena.
Much like the season-opening victory at Pitt last weekend, No. 17 WVU dug itself in an early hole, scoring a poor 46.9 on uneven bars in the squad's opening event. But unlike last week's victory, WVU could not mount as a large a comeback in falling to the Chippewas.
West Virginia was plagued by several falls on bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
Despite the team's poor performance senior TeShawne Jackson moved into sole possession of first place on the all-time WVU vault 9.9 or higher scores list with 18 after placing first in the meet with a 9.925. She was tied with former All-American Kristin Quackenbush. Sophomore Kari Williams finished second with a 9.825.
Senior Dinorh Boyd won the floor exercise with a 9.9, her 12th career 9.9 or higher score, which ties her with teammate Amanda Halovanic for fourth on the all-time WVU floor scores list.
West Virginia returns to action for its home-opener Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m., when it takes on Eastern Michigan at the WVU Coliseum.
