Morgantown, W.Va. - Saint Francis (Pa.) got goals from Aaron Williams, Ed Hayden and Bernie Showers to lead the Red Flash to a 3-0 victory over West Virginia Wednesday night at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex.
Williams got Saint Francis on the board first when Andrew Rohacek broke free from the WVU defense and sent a perfectly placed cross in front of Williams, who scored after one touch at the 16:52 mark. Hayden gave the Red Flash a 2-0 lead at the 66:37 mark on a header that was assisted by Gary Burke. Showers closed the scoring with just over two minutes remaining in the game by getting deep into West Virginia territory and making a series of moves before putting the ball into the right corner of the net.
The game was physical throughout, with a total of 38 fouls and 10 cards being handed out on the night.
Despite being shutout, WVU managed to outshoot Saint Francis by a margin of 23-6, but the Mountaineers were only able to put two shots on goal. All six of the Red Flash's shots were on goal. West Virginia could also not capitalize on the 16-1 advantage in corner kicks. Jason Hillenbrand and Deran Pursoo led WVU with six and five shots.
With the win, Saint Francis improves to 2-3-0 on the year, while WVU falls to 2-1-0. The Mountaineers return to action Saturday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m., when they travel to take on No.16 Connecticut at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn., for a BIG EAST matchup.
