CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The University of Virginia and West Virginia University both accepted bids from the Continental Tire Bowl this afternoon, it was announced by bowl officials. The game will be played on Saturday, December 28th in Ericsson Stadium and will be televised live by ESPN2. Kickoff is set for 11:00 AM EDT.
“We are extremely excited to invite two strong teams, Virginia and West Virginia to the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl,” said executive director Ken Haines. “With our selection spots in the conferences, to be able to get the second place team from both the ACC and Big East is really a coup for the Bowl and the city of Charlotte. We feel this will help establish a great Continental Tire Bowl tradition for future years and will be an excellent opportunity for fans to experience a very competitive college bowl game.”
Virginia (8-5 overall, 6-2 ACC) finished the season tied for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with wins over bowl-bound NC State, Maryland and Clemson. West Virginia (9-3 overall, 6-1 Big East) finished in second place in the Big East Conference with wins over Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech while their only conference loss was to undefeated Miami.
Tickets are priced at $55, $40 and $25 each for the matchup with Virginia. A limited number of club seats are available only to Gold Coat and Directors level members of the Mountaineer Athletic Club.
Orders will be accepted by mail or by telephone with payment by checks made payable to "WVU Athletic Department" or Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Each order must be accompanied by a $8 overnight shipping and handling charge. Tickets are not available via ticket outlets.
To order tickets, fans should call 1-800-WVU GAME or mail to Mountaineer Ticket Office, West Virginia University, PO Box 0877, Morgantown, WV 26507-0877. The ticket office will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
