Football: WVU Advances in Coaches Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia advanced three spots in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, announced Sunday morning.
West Virginia, idle since winning at Pitt on Nov. 30 to end the regular season with a 9-3 record, benefited from losses by Virginia Tech to Miami and Colorado to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game to advance to 13th this week. The Mountaineers also climbed over Boise State, which finished its regular season with an 11-1 record.
WVU’s ranking is its highest since being ranked 13th on Oct. 18, 1998 before losing to Miami, 34-31.
Miami ends the regular season ranked No. 1. Other Big East teams in the rankings include Virginia Tech at No. 19 and Pitt at No. 23. Boston College received 24 votes.
Maryland, which played at West Virginia on Oct. 5, is ranked 18th.
The Associated Press Top 25 poll will be released later today.
Also, West Virginia is expected to officially learn its bowl destination sometime this afternoon.
