| West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez' team advanced five spots in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. |
The Mountaineers earned 555 points in this week’s poll after defeating Pitt 24-17 yesterday in Pittsburgh and are ranked 16th. West Virginia, enjoying its highest ranking since Oct. 18, 1998 when the Mountaineers were 13th in the AP poll, have defeated nationally ranked opponents on the road for the first time since 1983.
Miami continues to sit atop the rankings with an 11-0 record. The Hurricanes take on No. 14 Virginia Tech this weekend in the Orange Bowl.
The Panthers dropped to No. 24.
Maryland, which defeated West Virginia earlier this season, is ranked No. 19. Boston College defeated Rutgers last weekend to finish the regular season with an 8-4 record and received 27 votes.
West Virginia also made noticable advancement in the AP Top 25, going from No. 24 last week to No. 15 this week. The Mountaineers tallied 616 poll points.
Meanwhile, West Virginia’s regular season is completed and the Mountaineers must now await word on which bowl will extend an invitation. West Virginia is assured at least a second-plce finish in the Big East and that spot is slated for the Gator Bowl, but Notre Dame is also in the Gator Bowl equation.
The Gator Bowl selection committee has already extended an invitation to North Carolina State of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
