MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team returns to the court Friday, Nov. 29, to take on Akron in the second game of the RazeWV.com Hoops Bash at the WVU Coliseum at 4:30 p.m.
Coppin State (1-1) battles Troy State (0-2) in the first game at 2 p.m.
West Virginia (2-0) is coming off a 77-72 win at Bucknell on Monday night. Junior guard Kate Bulger scored a season-high 28 points and Yolanda Paige added 17 to help WVU improve to 2-0 on the road to start the season for the first time since 1988.
The Mountaineers opened the year at Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, Nov. 22, winning 76-63.
Bulger’s 21.0 points-per-game average leads four double-digit scorers for WVU. Paige is averaging 14.5 points, junior forward Michelle Carter is averaging 11.5 points, and junior guard Sherell Sowho is averaging 10 points per game. Senior forward Eartha White rounds out West Virginia’s projected starting five.
Akron is 0-2 on the year, having lost to Indiana State, 87-59 at home and at Illinois-Chicago, 65-53. The Zips went 1-27 last year and have lost 29 of their last 30 games. The Zips have a new coach in Kelly Kennedy and a team that returns four starters from a year ago.
Six-two center Cassandra Martin leads Akron with averages of 13 points and nine rebounds per game.
In the first game, Coppin State will take on Troy State. The Lady Eagles of Coppin State come into Friday’s game with a 1-1 record, defeating Cornell, 68-62 and losing at Seton Hall, 77-49.
Five-eight guard Shamara Singletary led Coppin State with 11 points in the Seton Hall loss. Five-eleven junior forward LaKesha Wills led the Lady Eagles in their win over Cornell with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Troy State comes into its game with Coppin State following losses to Auburn and Louisiana-Monroe. Five-eight senior guard Chaquita Alexander is the only Trojan player averaging double figures at 10 points per game.
The two winners will play the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 4:30 p.m. The consolation game will get underway at 2 p.m.
