| Sophomore Megan metcalfe finished ninth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. |
“I can’t begin to say how proud I am of Megan for the way she came back after her injury last year,” said West Virginia coach Jeff Huntoon. “Our goal going into the race was for her to finish in the top 15, but she exceeded that with her performance today. I’m sure her performance will carry over into the indoor track season.”
Metcalfe, an Edmonton, Alberta, native, finished the 5K Wabash Valley Family Sports Center Lavern Gibson Championship Course with a time of 20:01.0, edging 10th-place finisher Sara Gorton of Colorado by four-hundredths of a second.
North Carolina’s Shalene Flanagan won the race with a time of 19:36.0.
BYU won the national championship with a team score of 85 points, followed by Stanford and Notre Dame in the top three. Three other Big East teams finished in the top eight in No. 4 Georgetown, No. 6 Providence and No. 8 Villanova.
Metcalfe becomes just the second West Virginia University runner to earn All-America honors in cross country. Charity Wachera was the first to capture All-America honors in 1997 with her 11th place finish.
Also, Metcalfe’s ninth-place finish is the highest in WVU history – male or female. All-American Carl Hatfield had the best finish prior to that with a 10th-place finish in 1968. Hatfield was a two-time All-American in 1967-68.
Last weekend Metcalfe won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional held in Davis, W.Va.
