MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University men's tennis coach Ed Dickson today announced the signing of Wil Lofgren for the 2003-04 season. The coach also announced the addition of sophomore Julian Mesa for the upcoming spring 2003 season.
Lofgren, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is considered one of the top players in the Midwest region. Last season he captured the 2001 National Indoor Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was ranked No. 19 in the Midwest Boys 16 singles list.
Lofgren led his Princeton High squad to the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) championship in just his freshman season with an 18-0 record at No. 3 singles.
The 6-foot-2 right-hander was also a standout academically at Princeton and was named to the 2001 all-GMC academic team.
"Wil Lofgren is a great tennis player and a good student and we are happy to have him in our program," said Dickson. "He should bring size and strength to our team and contribute immediately."
Mesa, a native of Meddellin, Colombia, was considered among the top five players in his country and has a wealth of international experience to his credit. Mesa has faced tough competition such as professional tennis star Andy Roddick in South American tournaments.
"We are also fortunate to have Julian join us for the upcoming spring," Dickson added. "He has some impressive experience under his belt and we expect him to improve more and more every day."
The Mountaineers will begin their 2003 campaign on Jan. 25 at Virginia Tech.
