JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State's big-play attack, manned by a fleet of speedy personnel, proved too much this night, as the Seminoles overwhelmed West Virginia in the 1982 Gator Bowl on a cold and rainy evening in Jacksonville.
The Mountaineers made a host of uncharacteristic mistakes as former WVU coach Bobby Bowden's squad dominated the game and spoiled West Virginia's hopes of breaking into the nation's Top 10.
With Florida State leading 17-6 early in the third quarter, West Virginia's Willie Drewrey returned a punt 82 yards to the Seminole seven-yard line. Mountaineer hopes were raised, but three plays netted only one yard, and Paul Woodwide's 23-yard field goal attempt was wide right. Florida State proceeded to score the next two times it had the ball.
Woodside kicked two first-half field goals, and Kevin White passed to Darrell Miller in the fourth quarter to account for the Mountaineer scoring as Don Nehlen lost his first bowl game as head coach at West Virginia.
