Nate Wood joined West Virginia University Athletics as the executive senior associate athletics director for governance and compliance in October 2026.

In this role, Wood oversees athletics compliance, establishing compliance strategies and monitoring to ensure athletics complies within the regulations set by the NCAA, Big 12 Conference, College Sports Commission and West Virginia University.

Wood joins the Mountaineers with nearly 15 years of experience working in compliance departments with multiple Power 4 universities, including North Carolina, Michigan and the University of Southern California.

Most recently, Wood served as the associate athletic director of compliance at North Carolina since 2019. With the Tar Heels, he was instrumental in assisting the athletic department in implementing name, image and likeness (NIL) strategy, compliance and policy creation. He provided general managers throughout UNC Athletics with information and policy guidance on the ever-changing environment of NIL.

While at UNC, Wood also served as a professor of sports law in the exercise and sport management department and he was a supervising attorney and mentor for the Harvard Law School Sports Law Clinic.

Wood also worked as an assistant athletic director of compliance at Michigan and as an assistant director of athletic compliance and governance at USC.

He earned a B.S. in public policy from Indiana and a J.D. from the Florida Coastal School of Law.
