Matt Wells joined the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in December 2002 and serves as Deputy Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Performance.
As part of a restructuring within athletics in September 2026, Wells' role changed to Deputy Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Performance where he oversee the department’s academic and student-athlete development units in addition to the divisions of strength & conditioning, nutrition, athletic equipment, sports medicine, sports psychology, communications and digital media.
Wells is a member of the department’s executive team and is responsible for the department’s relationship with United Bank and its apparel contract. Wells also serves as the sport administrator for baseball and wrestling.
Prior to becoming a Deputy Athletics Director in December 2023, Wells spent two years as Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director, five years as a Senior Associate Athletics Director, two years as the Associate AD for External Affairs, two years as the Assistant AD for Marketing and Sales, six years as WVU's sports marketing director and four years as WVU's assistant sports marketing director.
A Lake City, Tennessee, native, Wells also worked in Tennessee's athletic marketing office as a graduate assistant from 1999-2000, and as a student assistant from 1997-99.
Wells holds two degrees from the University of Tennessee, a bachelor's degree in education (1999) and a master's degree in sport management (2000). Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), attended the 2019 Lead 1 Institute and was a member of the class of 2015 Generation Next 40 Under 40 Outstanding Young Leaders as selected by the State Business Journal.
Wells and his wife, Lainie, reside in Morgantown with their son, Alex, and daughter Corbin.
