Buchanan joined the West Virginia volleyball staff in February 2026 after building a diverse coaching résumé across Division I, high school, and elite club volleyball. He arrived in Morgantown following a season at Yale, where he served as an assistant coach and contributed to daily training, on-court technical instruction, and opponent scouting. At Yale, Buchanan analyzed match film, prepared scouting reports, and supported the Bulldogs’ strategic planning throughout the season.
Prior to his time in New Haven, Buchanan coached within the Northeast Volleyball Club system beginning in 2024, serving as a lead coach for academy camps, clinics, and private training. His work emphasized technical development, positional training, and preparing athletes for collegiate-level play.
Buchanan also spent the 2025 season as an assistant coach at Joel Barlow High School, helping guide the boys volleyball program to the 2025 Connecticut State Championship. His responsibilities included practice planning, athlete development, and match preparation for one of the state’s top high school programs.
Before advancing into collegiate coaching, Buchanan served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Idaho from 2017–18, assisting with practice design, statistical analysis, and opponent scouting. He also worked individual and team camps at Washington State University in 2023 and 2024, contributing to training sessions for athletes across the region.
A standout collegiate student-athlete, Buchanan played as a setter at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, helping the Rainbow Warriors capture back-to-back NCAA Division I National Championships in 2021 and 2022 and two Big West titles. He later continued his career at Sacred Heart University, competing as both a setter and middle blocker and serving as a two-time team captain.
Off the court, Buchanan demonstrated strong leadership as the President of Special Olympics Hawai‘i from 2021–24, coordinating statewide events, managing organizational operations, and collaborating with campus and community partners.
A native of Idaho, Buchanan earned his BBA in Management from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and is completing his MBA and Leadership Graduate Certificate at Sacred Heart University.
