MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team finished the 2024-25 season with a Top 5 finish at the GOLFWEEK National Golf Invitational (NGI) Championship at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, on Sunday.
The Mountaineers shot Even par for the tournament with rounds of 287-281-296=864 to finish in fifth place.
Freshman Ryan Leach paced the Mountaineers with a ninth-place finish after shooting 73-67-73=213 (-3). Westy McCabe posted a Top 15 finish, tying for 12th place with rounds of 70-72-73=215 (-1). Nick Turowski and Harrison Thompson tied for 28th place at +3. Turowski recorded rounds of 71-71-73=219, while Thompson was 71-71-77=219. Carson Kammann finished +11 with rounds of 73-74-80=227.
"Really grateful for the opportunity to compete in the postseason and thankful to GOLFWEEK for inviting us out," coach Sean Covich said. "Obviously a little disappointed in our final round, however, this was a very positive week for us. Most of these guys have been working hard while waiting their turn to get their chance in our starting lineup. So this tournament was for them, to see what they could do under pressure.
"I was really impressed with what our young guys did this week, especially true freshman Ryan Leach. He has grown a lot this season and will continue to improve. Excited that all five of these guys returning next season, along with NCAA individual qualifier Kaleb Wilson, plus our very talented three incoming freshmen."
