MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team lost to Utah, 4-2, at Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on Thursday.
West Virginia (6-12, 0-7 Big 12) jumped out to an early lead after securing the doubles point.
The doubles team comprised of senior
Michaela Kucharova and freshman
Laura Villanueva Morillo was dominant in the No. 2 seed match. The pair rolled past Utah's Sara Akid and Emma Valletta, 6-1.
A loss in the No. 3 spot put pressure on the Mountaineers as senior
Mille Haagensen and graduate student
Julie Bousseau faced a tough matchup in the No. 1 seed match. The pair won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6), to earn the doubles point for WVU.
In singles play, Utah took control of the match. Villanueva Morillo earned her first career win in Big 12 Conference play as she defeated Emma Valletta, 6-2, 6-2.
Utah quickly rallied and won the next three singles matches to clinch the match for its second conference win of the season.
