Carlson Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student Simon Carlson of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments. Carlson tallied eight points in two wins for the Mountaineers this past week, scoring two goals with an assist against Saint Francis before adding a goal and an assist against George Washington. The Kennesaw, Georgia native now has four assists this season, tied for the most in the nation while his 10 points is sixth in the country. Carlson and the Mountaineers are back in action this Friday for their first road test of the season against California Baptist with kickoff set for 10 p.m. ET.
This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia kicks off a west coast road trip on Friday, Sept. 6, at California Baptist ... kickoff from Riverside is set for 10 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN+.
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers went 2-0 in two home matches this past week ... the week started with a 4-0 win over Saint Francis on Monday, Aug. 26 ... graduate students Sergio Ors Navarro and Simon Carlson each scored two goals in the victory ... Last Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia went 1-1 last week, falling at No. 12 Penn State, 3-1, on Aug. 29, before securing a 2-0 win at home over Robert Morris on Sept. 1 … at Penn State on Thursday, the Nittany Lions found the back of the net in the 15th minute to take the lead, then added two more scores in the 23rd and 55th minutes … the Mountaineers got on the board in the 90th minute on a goal from junior forward Ajanae Respass following a well-placed corner kick from senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran, but ultimately fell, 3-1 … back home against RMU on Sunday, the Mountaineers (3-2) found the back of the net in the third minute of the first half and the eighth minute of the second half to tally the two-goal win over the Colonials … Heredia-Beltran scored the eventual game winner in the first frame, while junior forward Taylor White added her third tally of the year at the 52:22 mark in the second … Respass was credited with an assist on both goals, while fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy also assisted on Heredia-Beltran's score.

WVU fell to Wake Forest on Saturday evening, 3-2 with scores of 15-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-22 and 7-15 ... the Mountaineers wrapped up the weekend versus Hoftsra on Sunday, securing a 3-1 victory with scores of 25-22, 25-22, 16-25 and 26-24 ... WVU was named the champions of the Wake Forest Invitational, as redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton collected MVP honors and sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold was named to the All-Tournament team.

Jen Greeny was named the program's fifth head coach in December 2023 and brings a career record of 349 -200 (.636) to West Virginia ...
