
Clark Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Derek Clark of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Clark tossed a complete-game shutout against Kansas on April 6, as part of a sweep of the Jayhawks for the Mountaineers. He struck out seven in the game and allowed just three hits, getting stronger as the game went on as he retired 13 of the last 14 batters to come to the plate.
It was the third straight outing for Clark where he went nine innings. He has struck out more batters (20) than hits allowed (19) in that span.
Clark and the Mountaineers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10, at Marshall with first pitch from Jack Cook Field set for 6 p.m. ET.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays four games this week, beginning with a contest at Marshall on Wednesday, April 10 … first pitch from Jack Cook Field in Huntington is set for 6 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers will then return home for a weekend series against UCF … first pitch on Friday, April 12, is set for 6:30 p.m., Saturday for 4 p.m. and Sunday for 1 p.m.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers swept a road series at Kansas over the weekend to improve to 19-12 overall and 8-4 in the Big 12 … the weekend started with an 11-10 victory in a back-and-forth affair … in the ninth inning, junior Brodie Kresser hit a game-tying home run before junior JJ Wetherholt had the game-winning double … on April 6, senior Derek Clark went the distance on the mound in a complete-game shutout, striking out seven while allowing just three hits … on April 7, the Mountaineers completed the sweep with a 16-9 victory … WVU hit six home runs in the contest, getting two from senior Reed Chumley and one each from sophomores Logan Sauve and Sam White and juniors Kyle West and Grant Hussey.
Notes: The Mountaineers sit atop the Big 12 standings along with Oklahoma at 8-4 … the sweep of the Jayhawks was just the second Big 12 road sweep by the Mountaineers in program history, also doing so against Baylor in 2023 … Clark has now thrown nine innings in three straight starts … his outing was the first complete-game shutout for a Mountaineer since Blaine Traxel went the distance in a 10-0 win at Baylor last season … in Sunday's win, the Mountaineers hit four straight home runs in the eighth inning off the bats of Sauve, White, Chumley and West … it was just the ninth time in program history that WVU has hit at least six home runs with the last coming against Bryant in 2021 … this weekend also saw the return of both Wetherholt and Sauve to the lineup after extended absences due to injuries … Sauve hit .500 (9-for-18) with a home run and four RBI which included a five-hit performance in Sunday's victory … it was the first five-hit game of the season for a Mountaineer and first since Wetherholt had five hits against Appalachian State early last season … Wetherholt hit .385 (5-for-13) over the weekend with a double and four RBI.
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will hit the road for its final regular season matches of the season ... the Mountaineers will face Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, on Thursday, April 11, at 6 p.m. ET ... WVU will then face BYU in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m.
Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia lost to No. 56 Kansas, 5-2, at Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on April 5 ... the Mountaineers defeated Iowa State, 4-1, on Senior Day in Morgantown on April 7.
Notes: West Virginia's 11-1 record through 12 matches was its best record to start the season since 1986 when the team began 12-0 ... for the first time in program history, WVU has won multiple Big 12 matches in a single season ... with the win against Houston, the Mountaineers have their most wins (14) in a season since 2010.

Last week in Track & Field: The Mountaineers competed at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational on April 5-6, in Fairfax, Virginia … the weekend was highlighted by redshirt freshman Annishka McDonald who finished second overall in the women's high jump on April 5, at the 1.68-meter mark … redshirt sophomore Zara Zervos boasted a personal best in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, running for a time of 11:29.28 on Friday evening as well … on April 6, freshman Lily Haught secured a sixth place finish in the women's 400 meter run with a time of 58.04 … redshirt sophomore Emily Bryce also added a sixth place finish in the women's 1,500 meters, collecting a time of 4:36.61.
