
WVU Ties School Record Shooting -17 in First Round in Puerto Rico

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team tied a school record by shooting 17-under-par in the first round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico, on Sunday.
WVU's 17-under-par ties the school record for lowest round vs. par set at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate in 2022. West Virginia's round of 271 on Sunday ties the school record set at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate in 2022 and at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in 2019. Earlier this season, WVU posted the second-lowest, 18-hole total in school history at 14-under-par in The N.I.T. in Tucson, Arizona.
All eight Mountaineers shot under par in today's first round. As a group, the Mountaineers recorded 41 birdies and three eagles.
Four Mountaineers posted or tied personal-best scores today, led by Max Green and Will Stakel (competing as an individual). Each set career bests with rounds of 66, tying them for fourth place in the individual standings. Both golfers are two shots off the individual lead. Todd Duncan shot a career-low 67 and is tied for eighth place.
Trent Tipton, Kaleb Wilson and Oli Ménard (competing as an individual) are tied for 21st place with each golfer shooting a 3-under-par 69. Jackson Davenport shot a 2-under-par 70, while Harrison Thompson (competing as an individual) matched a career low with a 71 (1-under-par).
The Mountaineers are one shot off the lead entering Monday's second round. UNC Greensboro shot 18-under-par on Sunday. The Mountaineers have a four-stroke lead over third-place ULM. Seventeen teams are competing in the field.
The second round at TPC Dorado Beach will begin at 8:30 a.m. local time. The third round will start at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
On Sunday in Raleigh, North Carolina, three golfers wrapped up play in the Wolfpack Individual Invitational at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Carson Kammann led the way for the Mountaineers with rounds of 74-73=147 (+5). Westy McCabe recorded rounds of 78-76=154 (+12) and Pierce Grieve posted rounds of 81-75=156 (+14).
