MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Hayhurst family has continued their support of the West Virginia rifle program, helping to fund a renovation project to the outdoor rifle range at Camp Mountaineer in Morgantown.
The partnership between the rifle program and Camp Mountaineer was initiated by the Hayhurst Family and will provide a lasting impact on the program. This project involves an extension of the outdoor rifle range to make it an outdoor competition length for the rifle program.
"The Hayhurst family has once again shown its unwavering support for our athletics department by improving the student-athlete experience and helping our rifle program stay nationally competitive," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "The Hayhurst's are always willing to help our student-athletes improve and their dedication to the Mountaineers is not only appreciated but also impactful."
The renovations will allow the team to utilize the facility throughout the year to better prepare for matches. International smallbore matches are regularly shot at outdoor ranges and this project aims to allow the Mountaineers proper training in preparation for these events.
"Creating an outdoor 50-meter training facility means a great deal to our team and it will provide a wonderful training environment for the team members," Hayhurst Family Head Coach Jon Hammond said. "There are limited outdoor ranges in the USA so this provides a great resource for our team that will help them prepare for national and international competitions and will be a great recruiting tool. This wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Hayhurst family and the staff at Camp Mountaineer, so we are appreciative of their support and partnership in the project."
"We are honored to continue supporting the WVU Rifle Team in partnership with the Scouting America Mountaineer Area Council and Camp Mountaineer. This collaboration has created a valuable opportunity for the Rifle Team, Scouting America, and the local community. As an Eagle Scout and former Camp Mountaineer staff member, I am proud to be part of this initiative and deeply appreciate everyone who made it possible," said Jim Davis of the Hayhurst Family, and member of the Mountaineer Area Council Executive Board.
Natives of West Virginia, who grew up in Buckhannon, the Hayhurst's have been longtime supporters of West Virginia University and Mountaineer Athletics. The Hayhurst family is pleased to continue its long-term support of WVU Athletics with this renovation.
