Shertzer Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After scoring the game-winning goal on Oct. 13 at Baylor, sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
In the Mountaineers' second game of a two-match road swing through Texas, Shertzer found the back of the net for the first time in her career in the 44th minute. As time was expiring in the first half, she intercepted a Baylor pass and took it all the up the field to create her own opportunity. She dribbled into the 18-yard box and sent a rocket on frame for her first career tally and a 1-0 WVU lead.
 
Additionally, Shertzer and the West Virginia defense earned their seventh shutout of the season against the Bears. The clean sheet also marked the Mountaineers' first on the road since Oct. 15, 2023, at Kansas.
 
West Virginia now returns to Morgantown for its final two home matches of the regular season. Up first, the Mountaineers welcome Texas Tech to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 17. It's Fan Appreciation Night, and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: The No. 4 West Virginia University men's soccer team has two games this week, beginning with a road contest at Dayton, Tuesday, Oct. 15 ... kickoff for the final non-conference match of the season is set for 7 p.m. ... the Mountaineers will be back home on Saturday, Oct. 19, against South Carolina ... kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 1 p.m. ... the game against the Gamecocks is free admission for all fans.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers remained unbeaten with a 4-2 victory at Georgia Southern ... junior Marcus Caldeira scored a brace in the contest while graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro scored his 11th goal and freshman Isaac Scheer netted his first-career goal ... Ors Navarro finished the night with four points, adding two assists ... senior Frederik Jorgensen and graduate student Ryan Baer also collected assists in the win.
 
Notes: West Virginia is one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in the country along with Western Michigan ... Caldeira and Ors Navarro each recorded their 50th career points in the win over Georgia Southern ... Ors Navarro is tied for the NCAA lead with 11 goals on the season ... the victory over the Eagles was the 50th for head coach Dan Stratford at WVU.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia now returns to Morgantown for its final two home matches of the regular season ... up first, the Mountaineers welcome No. 24 Texas Tech to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 17 ... it's Fan Appreciation Night, and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET ... WVU then concludes its 2024 home slate on Sunday, Oct. 29, welcoming Colorado on Senior Day ... kickoff is tabbed for 1 p.m.
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU split a pair of matches during a two-game road swing through Texas ... first, the Mountaineers fell 3-1 at No. 12 TCU in Fort Worth on Oct. 10 ... despite West Virginia getting on the board first with a beautiful goal from junior forward Taylor White, the Horned Frogs responded with three consecutive tallies to secure the win ... however, WVU got back in the win column on Oct. 13, earning a 2-0 win at Baylor in Waco ... sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer put the Mountaineers on the board in the waning minutes of the first half, scoring the eventual game winner ... senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran also added an insurance tally in the second half to help secure the victory for WVU.
 
Notes: The win over Baylor propelled the Mountaineers across the 400-win plateau, a mark they achieved in the program's 29th season ... the only coach in program history, Nikki Izzo-Brown has led West Virginia to an all-time mark of 400-141-75 ... Shertzer's goal against Baylor was the first of her career ... the WVU defense also earned its seventh shutout of the season against the Bears, which also marked its first road shutout since Oct. 15, 2023, a 1-0 win at Kansas ... redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith secured a career-high tying five saves in the clean sheet.
 
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers will host UCF on Oct. 16 ... first serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown ... Wednesday's match will feature the Weeknight Happy Hour deal and serve as the team's True Blue match.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia fell to No. 8 Kansas on Oct. 10, 3-0 inside the WVU Coliseum ... the Mountaineers concluded the week on Oct. 13, dropping a five-set match to Kansas State, 3-2 in Morgantown ... the Mountaineers were led by senior outside hitter Hailey Green, who collected 30 kills versus the Jayhawks and Wildcats.
 
Notes: Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton leads WVU with 234 kills and 28 service aces this season ... Tanton ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 in service aces, as well as No. 10 in kills and points.
 
This Week in Golf:  West Virginia is idle this week and will close out its fall season by hosting the White Sands Collegiate from Oct. 25-27 in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
 
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers finished the Big 12 Match Play Championships at 2-2-1 with wins over Colorado and UCF as well as a tie against No. 24-ranked Utah at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas, from Monday-Wednesday also, freshman golfer Nick Turowski won the Red Flash Invitational at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday … Turowski, a native of Harrison City, Pennsylvania, was the only golfer under par in the field, finishing -1 in the 36-hole event … after shooting Even par on Monday, Turowski had a quadruple bogey on No. 3 to go to 4-over-par before recording five birdies over the final 14 holes to win the event … Turowski becomes the second WVU golfer in a week to win a collegiate golf event … last week, junior Kaleb Wilson won the inaugural Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational … Turowski becomes the sixth different WVU golfer to win a collegiate tournament, and it marks the ninth time a WVU golfer has won a collegiate tournament.
 
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia will send split squads to Princeton Fall Classic on Oct. 18, and the Wisconsin Pre Nationals on Oct. 19 ... Friday's Princeton Fall Classic will be held in Princeton, New Jersey at 10:30 a.m. ET, while the Wisconsin Pre Nationals will take place at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin at 11 a.m.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers finished second at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Oct. 12, collecting 72 team points ... redshirt freshman Mary Delaney finished first for West Virginia, claiming fourth place in her collegiate debut in the women's 5k with a time of 18:36.70.
Notes: WVU was tabbed as No. 28 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Coaches Poll on Oct. 8 ... the Mountaineers were also selected as fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings.
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships from Oct. 17-22, at the Virginia Tennis Complex at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
