Major Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sophomore Aidan Major has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after his stellar performance on the mound in the NCAA Lexington Regional.
Facing Ball State in an elimination game, Major put on a dominant display against the Cardinals, as he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings in relief to pick up his fourth win of the season. He allowed just one hit while striking out eight and walking none.
The eight strikeouts matched a career-high for the Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, native, having also completed he feat against Oklahoma State earlier this season and against Pitt in 2022.

Notes: The Mountaineers finish the season with a 40-20 record … the 40 wins match a program record set by the 1994 squad … JJ Wetherholt finished the year with a .449 batting average, taking over the national lead with his final hit on Sunday … He is 20 points clear of the next highest among players still playing in the NCAA Tournament, meaning he is likely to become the first Mountaineer to ever lead the nation in hitting … he also finished the season with 101 hits, becoming just the second WVU player ever to reach the century mark as he matched Tyler Kuhn's record set in 2008 … Wetherholt was named a First-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball News … Wetherholt becomes just the fifth Mountaineer in program history be named First-Team All-America, joining Bill Marovic (1964), Chris Enochs (1997), Jedd Gyorko (2010) and Alek Manoah (2019). McCabe qualified after earning second at the NCAA East Regional in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:54.41 ... the semifinal of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase is scheduled for 9:02 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 8, with the finals slated for 9:24 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 ... the National Championships are on ESPN2.
