MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five West Virginia University football players will be attending this year's Big 12 Media Days taking place July 12-13 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
This year's contingent of Mountaineer players consists of veteran offensive linemen Zach Frazier and Doug Nester, emerging defensive lineman Sean Martin, senior middle linebacker Lee Kpogba and talented junior safety Aubrey Burks.
Kpogba and Burks finished one and two in total tackles last year for West Virginia, Kpogba producing 92 total stops plus six quarterback hurries, 5 ½ tackles for losses and 3 ½ sacks. Burks generated 66 total tackles, 4 1/5 tackles for losses, two pass breakups, a sack and an interception.
Martin became a starter in week three and finished the season with 34 tackles, eight tackles for losses and four sacks. He also had two quarterback hurries and forced a fumble.
Athlon Sports recently listed Frazier on its preseason All-America first team at center after he produced another strong season that included 51 knockdown blocks and playing error-free football in 11 of 12 games in 2022. Frazier, a two-time Walter Camp Second Team All-America choice, earned All-Big 12 First Team honors last season.
And Nester, who considered turning pro after last season, is back for his fifth season of college football and his third at WVU after transferring from Virginia Tech. Nester teamed with Frazier to help West Virginia average 171.5 yards per game on the ground last year – the Mountaineers' best season rushing performance since 2016.
The Big 12 will consist of 14 teams for 2023 with the additions of BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston, and Texas and Oklahoma remaining for one final campaign before joining the SEC in 2024.
A total of 61 players are scheduled to be at this year's media day event, presented by Old Trapper.
West Virginia opens the 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Penn State and the home opener is a week later against Duquesne on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. Season tickets are on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
