Hampton Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 8, 2023) – Junior Ben Hampton of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after his strong outing against Oklahoma.
Facing the Sooners in the series opener on May 5, Hampton threw 6.0 innings and allowed just one run while striking out three. He picked up his fifth win of the season as the Mountaineers went on to defeat Oklahoma, 9-3.
Hampton has been a steady veteran presence for West Virginia all season, as May 5 was his eighth quality start of the season. He is up to 61 strikeouts on the season to bring his career total to 198 in less than three full years.
The De Pere, Wisconsin, native looks to continue his strong pitching and reach the 200-strikeout milestone this weekend, as WVU hosts Texas Tech for three games.
This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers hit the road on Wednesday, May 10, for the third edition of the Backyard Brawl this season, facing Pitt at 6 p.m. at Charles L. Cost Field … WVU returns home for its final regular-season home series, as it hosts Texas Tech … first pitch on Friday, May 12, is set for 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 13, for 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 14, for 1 p.m. … Sunday also is Senior Day for the Mountaineers.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers enjoyed a 3-1 week, taking a midweek contest against Pitt, 10-0, before winning two of three against Oklahoma at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark … Against the Panthers, sophomore JJ Wetherholt went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run … redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely also hit a home run, his 10th of the season … freshman Ellis Garcia had the run-rule walk-off double in the seventh inning … freshmen Carson Estridge and Gavin Van Kempen combined for the shutout, striking out 10 … in the opener against Oklahoma, the Mountaineers won, 9-3 … junior Ben Hampton earned his fifth win of the season with 6.0 innings of one-run ball, striking out three … sophomore Aidan Major picked up his second save by throwing the final three innings with three strikeouts … four different players had multiple hits with junior Landon Wallace hitting a two-run home run … on May 6, the Sooners evened the series with a 6-3 win … the Mountaineers clinched the series with a 9-3 win on May 7 … Wetherholt and freshman Logan Sauve each hit home runs with Sauve driving in four runs … five pitchers combined for the victory with fifth-year senior Noah Short collecting his third win of the season.

Last Week in Track and Field: WVU concluded the regular season with Senior Night during the WVU Last Chance meet at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown ... sophomore Cassandra Williamson won the 800-meter with a time of 2:06.28 to help WVU in claiming the top three spots in the event ... freshman Olivia Cress and sophomore Abigale Mullings competed in the high jump and took the first two spots amongst the teams competing ... sophomore Ghamani Hogue earned her season best in the 100-meter hurdles ... senior Sada Wright competed in the discus throw, and her effort was good enough for third place at the meet ... redshirt freshman Aubrie Custer and Zara Zervos ran the 5,000-meter race, each setting their own milestones.

Saturday marked Hogue's best performance since the 2022 Mountaineer Showcase, when she set her personal best with a time of 15.12 ...
