Hampton Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 8, 2023) – Junior Ben Hampton of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after his strong outing against Oklahoma.
Facing the Sooners in the series opener on May 5, Hampton threw 6.0 innings and allowed just one run while striking out three. He picked up his fifth win of the season as the Mountaineers went on to defeat Oklahoma, 9-3.
Hampton has been a steady veteran presence for West Virginia all season, as May 5 was his eighth quality start of the season. He is up to 61 strikeouts on the season to bring his career total to 198 in less than three full years.
The De Pere, Wisconsin, native looks to continue his strong pitching and reach the 200-strikeout milestone this weekend, as WVU hosts Texas Tech for three games.
This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers hit the road on Wednesday, May 10, for the third edition of the Backyard Brawl this season, facing Pitt at 6 p.m. at Charles L. Last Week in Track and Field: WVU concluded the regular season with Senior Night during the WVU Last Chance meet at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown ... sophomore Cassandra Williamson won the 800-meter with a time of 2:06.28 to help WVU in claiming the top three spots in the event ... freshman Olivia Cress and sophomore Abigale Mullings competed in the high jump and took the first two spots amongst the teams competing ... sophomore Ghamani Hogue earned her season best in the 100-meter hurdles ... senior Sada Wright competed in the discus throw, and her effort was good enough for third place at the meet ... redshirt freshman Aubrie Custer and Zara Zervos ran the 5,000-meter race, each setting their own milestones.
