Tucker Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student Tevin Tucker of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after a standout week against Penn State and No. 18 Oklahoma State.

Tucker hit .625 (10-for-16) in four games this week with two doubles and eight runs scored. He had at least three hits in three games and scored at least one run in all four contests.

He started the week with a three-hit performance against the Nittany lions with a double and one run scored. In the series opener on the road at OSU, Tucker scored two runs and made a game-saving defensive play in the eighth inning to keep the Mountaineers in front.

On Saturday, he went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in WVU's 9-5 win over the Cowboys to clinch the Big 12 series victory. He then closed out the week with four hits on Sunday while scoring two runs and stealing a base.

The Prince George, Virginia, native is having a career year this season, as he is hitting .355 with five doubles, three triples, a home run, 16 RBI, 33 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.

This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers play four games this week, beginning with the Backyard Brawl against Pitt at PNC Park on Wednesday, April 19, at 6 p.m. … WVU will jump back into Big 12 play this weekend at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark with three games against TCU … First pitch against the Horned Frogs on Friday, April 21, is set for 6:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22, for 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m.

Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 2-2 this past week, dropping a midweek game at Penn State before taking two of three on the road at No. 18 Oklahoma State … against the Nittany Lions, graduate student Tevin Tucker went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, as the Mountaineers fell, 11-6 … on Friday, April 14, against OSU, the Mountaineers took down the Cowboys, 6-3 … sophomore JJ Wetherholt and graduate student Dayne Leonard each had three hits … junior Ben Hampton earned the win by allowing just three runs in 6.0 innings while striking out three … junior Carlson Reed earned the save with 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out six … in game two, WVU defeated the Cowboys, 9-5, to clinch the series … junior Landon Wallace drove in four runs, which included a clutch three-run home run in the eighth inning … Tucker had went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while junior Braden Barry also scored three times … sophomore Aidan Major earned the win with 5.1 innings out of the bullpen while striking out eight … the Mountaineers went for the sweep on Sunday but ultimately fell, 11-6 … in his first game of the season batting leadoff, Tucker went 4-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base.

Notes: Tevin Tucker hit .625 (10-for-16) with eight runs scored and had at least three hits in three of the games this past week … sophomores JJ Wetherholt and Grant Hussey each hit their eighth home run of the season against Oklahoma State which ties them both with redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely for the team lead … Wetherholt's home run led off the game on Friday, setting the tone for the series … it was the first lead-off home run for WVU this season … freshman Zack Ramppen picked up his first RBI of the season with a pinch-hit game-tying single in the seventh inning on Sunday … it is the first road-series win over a top-25 team for West Virginia since taking two of three from No. 10 TCU last April … in six trips to Stillwater since joining the Big 12, the Mountaineers have won the series three times … Oklahoma State is the second ranked team the Mountaineers have defeated this season after beating No. 13 Maryland back in February … WVU is now 3-1 this season against top-25 opponents.

This Week in Tennis: The West Virginia University women's tennis team (11-10, 1-7 Big 12) concludes its regular season against No. 10 Iowa State on Tuesday, April 18, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kansas, before starting postseason play on Thursday, April 20, at the Big 12 Championships hosted by the University of Kansas.

Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers concluded their 2023 home slate after a pair of losses on Friday, April 14, and Sunday, April 16 … during April 14's 7-0 loss to No. 35 Texas Tech, West Virginia dropped the doubles point when sophomore/senior pair Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang fell to Texas Tech's No. 36 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac … during singles play, Bossi, Chang, sophomore Michaela Kucharova, junior Momoko Nagato, redshirt freshman Maja Dodik and sophomore Tatiana Lipatova all suffered losses in two sets to the Lady Raiders … during April 16's competition against No. 50 TCU (12-8, 3-6 Big 12) the Mountaineers fell behind, 1-0, after the Horned Frogs claimed the doubles point … during singles play, Bossi, Chang, Nagato, Dodik and fifth-year senior Pei-Ju Hsieh were defeated in two sets … Kucharova claimed West Virginia's only victory of the day at No. 3 singles against TCU's Yu-Chin Tsai, 6-4, 2-6 (10-6), making the match final score, 6-1.

Notes: No. 10 Iowa State (16-4, 6-2 Big 12) enters Tuesday's matchup in Morgantown after defeating No. 35 Texas Tech, 4-1, on Sunday, April 14 … this weekend's competition marks the 12th matchup since the series began in 2009 with Iowa State holding the all-time advantage over the Mountaineers, 10-1 … during last year's match, the Cyclones defeated West Virginia, 6-1 … during the first round of last year's Big 12 Championships, West Virginia was defeated by Iowa State, 4-0.

This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia begins two consecutive weekends with split-squad action at the Mountaineer Showcase at The Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown and the Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 21-22.

Last Week in Track and Field: Redshirt senior Hayley Jackson and junior Mikenna Vanderheyden claimed top-ten finishes for WVU in the 1,500-meter … Jackson earned fifth, crossing the finish line at 4:18.34 … Vanderheyden took tenth with a time of 4:24.16 … sophomore Cassandra Williamson and Jackson earned podiums in the 800-meter … Williamson crossed the finish line at 2:05.67 to take first at the meet, while Jackson followed in third with a time of 2:08.68 … senior Tessa Constantine set her personal best in the 200-meter dash … The Sydney, Australia, native crossed the finish line at 25.20 … sophomore Abigale Mullings competed in the high jump in Lewisburg and led the way for the Mountaineers with a height of 1.63 meters.

This Week in Golf: The golf team will return to action on Monday, hosting the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … this will be the eighth consecutive Mountaineer Invitational … West Virginia will be joined by 12 other teams at Pete Dye. No. 21-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 92 VCU, Coastal Carolina, Drexel, James Madison, Western Carolina, St. John's, Marshall, William & Mary, Maryland, Xavier and UT-Martin will join the host Mountaineers at Pete Dye … Pete Dye Golf Club is a par-72, 7,308-yard course … this event will consist of five golfers per team with the top four counting in team scoring for each round … West Virginia's lineup will consist of junior Jackson Davenport, sophomores Max Green and Todd Duncan and freshmen Westy McCabe and Kaleb Wilson … fifth-year senior Kurtis Grant, senior Trent Tipton and juniors Oli Ménard and Will Stakel will compete as individuals for WVU.
