MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute against No. 25 Samford on Sept. 4, fifth-year senior defender Jordan Brewster of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Brewster helped West Virginia go 1-0-1 last week, tying No. 11 Auburn, 0-0, on Sept. 1, and then scoring the game winner for a 1-0 win over No. 25 Samford on Sept. 4. She took a rocket of a free kick from midfield that went right out of reach of the Samford goalie for the last-minute score to lift WVU over the Bulldogs.
 
The North Canton, Ohio, native also anchored the Mountaineer defense and led them to a pair of shutouts against West Virginia's ranked foes last week. The clean sheets pushed WVU's total to four on the year, as well as three in a row.
 
West Virginia returns home to host Clemson on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 11. Both matches will take place at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, with Thursday's contest kicking off at 7 p.m. ET, and Sunday's match slated for 1 p.m.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU battled to a 0-0 draw with No. 11 Auburn at Auburn Soccer Complex in Auburn, Alabama, on Sept. 1 … the Tigers rattled off 13 shots in the contest and placed seven of those on target, but senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey recorded a career-high tying seven saves to salvage the tie … the Mountaineers were held to just four total shots with zero on goal … despite Auburn's significant edge in shots, the two squads were nearly level in corner kicks, with Auburn taking a slight, 3-2 edge … in West Virginia's second match of the weekend, the team used an 89th-minute goal to earn a 1-0 win over No. 25 Samford in a neutral-site contest, also at Auburn Soccer Complex, on Sept. 4 … the Mountaineers once again struggled to find the back of the net for much of the match, but fifth-year senior defender Jordan Brewster's last-minute tally proved to be the difference … the North Canton, Ohio, native took a free kick from just shy of the midfield line and sent a rocket toward the goal, the ball was mishandled by the Samford goalie to give the Mountaineers' star defender an impressive score from distance … the final stats showed a very even contest, with WVU just edging Samford, 13-11, in shots … the two squads notched four shots on goal apiece, and West narrowly led Samford, 4-3, in corner kicks.
 
Notes: Brewster's tally against Samford was her first of the campaign and the seventh goal of her career, while the game-winning strike was the third of her career … Sunday's win over No. 25 Samford marked West Virginia's first win over a ranked opponent since topping No. 10 Virginia, 1-0, on April 3, 2021 … additionally, it was the team's first neutral-site ranked victory since defeating No. 9 Baylor, 3-0, on Nov. 4, 2018, to capture the 2018 Big 12 Championship crown … Samford and West Virginia met on the pitch for the first time in program history, as WVU now claims a 1-0 lead in the series … the Bulldogs became West Virginia's 118th different opponent all time … the Mountaineers' matchups with Clemson and Bucknell this week mark just the third meeting all time against each squad … Massey currently leads the Big 12 Conference in shutouts (4) and save percentage (0.885), while she is tied for No. 2 in the league in goals against average (0.500).
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: The No. 18-ranked Mountaineers return home for a pair of matches in Morgantown … first, WVU plays host to American on Tuesday, Sept. 6, before it battles Yale on Friday, Sept. 9 … both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m., ET, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia (1-2) is coming off a pair of road losses in the Keystone State … the Mountaineers dropped a 3-0 decision at then-No. 7 Pitt on Aug. 29, at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, before they fell, 3-2, at Penn State on Sept. 2, at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania … despite the loss at Pitt, which scored all three of its goals in the first half, West Virginia recorded 10 shots, including five on goal … at Penn State, senior midfielder Luke McCormick opened the scoring in the 19th minute, while redshirt senior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers found the back of the net in the 57th … however, the Nittany Lions scored back-to-back goals in the 76th and 80th minutes to claim the win.

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia remains on the road this week, as it travels to Vermillion, South Dakota, for a three-match tournament from Sept. 9-10 ... the Mountaineers are set to face Northern Colorado, South Dakota and CSU Bakersfield … WVU will have two matches on Friday, Sept. 9, with first serve against Northern Colorado set for 10:30 a.m. ET, while the match against South Dakota is scheduled for 8 p.m. ... the tournament finale is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, at 12 p.m., versus CSU Bakersfield.
 
Last Week in Volleyball: WVU (2-4) travelled to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge, at the Simplifi Arena in Stan Sheriff Center … the Mountaineers began the tournament falling 0-3 against UCLA, on Thursday, Sept. 1 … fifth year outside hitter Adrian Ell led West Virginia in the first match of the challenge with 11 kills and one service ace … freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller also started the tournament with a splash, registering nine kills and six digs … the Mountaineers fell 0-3 to host Hawaii, on Sept. 3 … junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Skye Stokes earned her first start of the season, registering a match-leading 12 digs … freshman Samiha Foster led the match in services aces with three, the first multi-service ace match of her collegiate career … WVU concluded the weekend with a 1-3 loss to Texas State on Sept. 4 … Ell led the squad with 22 assists and registered eight kills, while freshman middle blocker Melanie McGann tallied five blocks.
 
Notes: Miller was named to the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge All-Tournament team ... with 1.36 service aces per set and 2.32 blocks per set, the Mountaineers rank fifth and seventh in the Big 12, respectively … West Virginia also is performing on the defensive side, limiting opponents to 1.18 service aces per set and 11.64 digs per set, both good for fourth in the conference … through six matches, Ell ranks eighth in the Big 12 with 3.91 points per set, while her .36 service aces per set is good for ninth … freshman defensive specialist/libero Jordyn Schilling is ninth in the conference with 2.76 digs per set … McGann has tallied 1.05 blocks per set through the first six matches, good for ninth in the Big 12, while Gibson ranks ninth in assists per set with 7.32.
 
This Week in Golf: WVU opens the 2022-23 season this weekend in Minnesota … five members of the team will compete in the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 11-12, while four members of the team will compete at the Minnesota Golf Classic on Sept. 10-11.
