MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men's basketball coach Bob Huggins served as a guest studio analyst for Turner Sports during its NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament coverage this weekend.
College basketball's third-winningest coach joined Turner's Atlanta studio team of Nabil Karim, Candace Parker, Seth Davis and Rex Chapman for the Saturday-Sunday action. Former South Carolina coach Frank Martin handled the Thursday-Friday games in the same capacity.
Huggins, sporting his trademark West Virginia pullover, had a couple of notable moments.
Following Gonzaga's comeback victory over Memphis on Saturday night, Bulldogs forward Drew Timme came dangerously close to cursing on national television during his postgame interview.
Huggins, sometimes known to use colorful language himself, was asked how he avoids cursing during live interviews.
"It's a lot easier to censor yourself when there's about 12,000 people looking at you," he deadpanned. "You know, it's one thing to say it in the bedroom or the bathroom or whatever, but to say it in front of 14,000 people … that's a stretch."
On another occasion, veteran college basketball reporter Jeff Goodman tweeted a photo of a smiling Seth Davis looking at Huggins with the caption "This is love."
The Turner production team put the tweet on the air, prompting this exchange from Davis and Huggins.
"He wants to get ejected from here just like in the Big 12 Tournament," Davis joked.
"Where's Doug Sirmons when I need him?" Huggins replied to laughter.
Of course, this was in reference to official Doug Sirmons ejecting Huggins with 10 minutes left in the first half of West Virginia's Big 12 quarterfinal loss to Kansas in Kansas City.
Huggins has won 915 career games in 40 seasons at Walsh, Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State and West Virginia, including a 325-188 record after concluding his 15th season at his alma mater.
On Feb. 18, it was announced that Huggins is a finalist for the 2022 class of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
