MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Kendra Combs of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named to the 2022 All-Big 12 Conference Gymnastics Team on the all-around, the league announced on Wednesday.
With the honor, Combs becomes the first WVU gymnast to earn all-conference honors on the all-around since Hope Sloanhoffer in 2014. Additionally, she is the first Mountaineer to be named to the All-Big 12 team on any event since Kirah Koshinski earned All-Big 12 honors on vault in 2019.
"I'm so proud of Kendra, seeing all of her hard work pay off with such an incredible honor," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "It is a well-deserved recognition of the hard work, dedication and perseverance she has invested as a part of our Mountaineer family. She is doing the best gymnastics of her career, and I only see her getting better and better."
Combs earns the recognition with a 39.145 National Qualifying Score (NQS) as of March 14, placing her within the top two competitors in the Big 12 Conference on the all-around. She is ranked No. 2 in the conference, behind Oklahoma's Audrey Davis who owns a 39.485 NQS.
In just her first season competing in the all-around, Combs made her career debut in the Mountaineers' season-opening meet at Towson on Jan. 14. Since then, the Windsor, Connecticut, native has been a mainstay in WVU's all-around lineup, competing in all four events eight times this season.
Combs earned a career-best 39.325 on the all-around on Feb. 21, becoming the first gymnast to record a 39.325 total since now-assistant coach Zaakira Muhammad earned the mark at the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships on April 1, 2017. Combs reached the total with help from career-high scores of 9.85 on vault and 9.95 on floor exercise.
The All-Big 12 Team is named and released the Wednesday prior to the Big 12 Championship, based on individuals' NQS. The all-conference team consists of the top three student-athletes on vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, as well as the top two all-around competitors.
West Virginia now looks ahead to opening postseason competition at the 2022 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship on Saturday, March 19, in Denver, Colorado. This year's championship, hosted by defending Big 12 champion Denver, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET, inside Magness Arena.
