MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Veteran West Virginia University assistant athletics director and head Olympics sports athletic trainer Randy Meador is running out of room for all of the awards he's received during his outstanding 36-year tenure in the athletic training profession.
Two years ago, Meador was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association (MAATA) Hall of Fame and last Saturday, Randy was virtually inducted into the West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association (WVATA) Hall of Fame.
Following graduation from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1984 with a degree in physical education and athletic training, Meador was hired at WVU in 1985 to oversee the athletic training duties for the WVU men's basketball program working with Gale Catlett.
And Meador has been tending to the Mountaineers' physical needs ever since.
He's the tall, lean, bespectacled guy you see from time to time on television taking care of the Mountaineer men's basketball players. Since July 1991, Meador has coordinated West Virginia University's athletic training services, and he's also served as a preceptor in the College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CPASS) athletic training curriculum during his entire 36-year WVU tenure.
Affectionately known as "Doc" by the players and coaches, Meador's other awards and citations include West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2003, Mountaineer Touchdown Club Curbstone Coach award in 2003, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer in 2011 and National Athletic Trainers' Association's Athletic Trainer Service Award in 2014.
The avid outdoorsman earned a master's degree in athletic training from West Virginia in 1985 and served one term as president of the West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association from 1990-93.
Meador and his wife, the former Bev Day of Cincinnati, have two sons: Luke, a WVU graduate, and Eli.
