McCabe Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After finishing in first place at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Regional, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 12 junior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native finished the 6k at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course with a time of 20:05.7, giving her All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors. She was one of five Mountaineers to finish in the top 25.
 
McCabe became the second Mountaineer cross country runner to win a Mid-Atlantic Regional title. Most recently, Megan Metcalfe won in 2002
 
Overall, the team finished in second place and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, In Tallahassee, Florida, on Nov. 20.
 
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers (17-7, 6-6 Big 12) welcome Texas Tech to the WVU Coliseum for a pair of matches on Nov. 18-19 ... Thursday's match will begin at 5 p.m. ET, followed by Friday's match at 6 p.m. ... the Mountaineers will honor their eight seniors on Friday night prior to the match. 
 
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia swept Howard, 3-0, on Nov. 12, in Washington D.C., at Burr Gymnasium … the Mountaineers (17-7, 6-6 Big 12) took the match from the Bison (14-12,11-2 MEAC) in set scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-23 … WVU finished the match hitting a season-best .402 with 45 kills and six team blocks … additionally, the Mountaineers recorded eight service aces … West Virginia was led by two Mountaineers who tallied double-digit scores, including fifth-year senior outside hitter Athena Ardila, who recorded a season-high 11 kills, and senior setter Lacey Zerwas, who recorded 30 assists … Zerwas also recorded a career-high six service aces.
 
Notes: West Virginia and Texas Tech meet for the 21st time since 1985 … the Red Raiders lead the all-time series, 9-11 ... in the last meeting, West Virginia beat TTU in four sets on Sept. 25, 2020 … in the Big 12 Conference, the Mountaineers rank in the top five in five categories as a team … the team sits first in digs (16.27 per set), second in service aces (1.49 per set), second in opponent hitting percentage (.161), third in kills (13.58 per set) and fifth in assists (12.13 per set) … individually in the Big 12, seven Mountaineers rank in the top 10 in six categories … Zerwas ranks second in assists (10.43 per set) … in service aces, sophomore outside hitter Skye Stokes sits in second (.53 per set), Petrova sits in sixth (.32 per set) and Ell sits in ninth (.29 per set) … in digs, fifth-year senior libero Alexa Hasting sits in fifth (3.77 per set), Zerwas ranks eighth (2.81 per set) and Ell sits in ninth (2.80) … fifth-year outside hitter Briana Lynch ranks fifth in hitting .343, Ell sits in ninth in kills (3.33 per set) and freshman middle blocker Madison Page ranks ninth in blocks (1.16 per set).
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers await the NCAA Tournament men's soccer selection show on Monday, Nov. 15, where the field of 48 teams will be revealed at 1 p.m. ET, on NCAA.com.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia (11-3-4) fell to Georgia State, 1-0, in the MAC Championship Semifinal on Nov. 11, in DeKalb, Illinois … the Panthers' 76th-minute goal proved to be the difference on a chilly, windy day at the NIU Soccer and Track and Field Complex … the Mountaineers hit the post in the first half before smacking the crossbar in the 82nd minute to prevent a late equalizer … in all, the two teams finished with eight shots apiece … fifth-year senior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made three saves, all coming in the second half … following the event, redshirt sophomore defender Bjarne Thiesen and sophomore midfielder Ryan Baer were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
 
Notes: WVU has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 14 times, most recently in 2019 … the squad is 7-14 all-time in NCAA Tournament action … Tekesky made his 80th career appearance in last week's game against Georgia State, tying the program's all-time record for a goalkeeper, set by Zach Johnson in 2010 … four players earned All-MAC honors last week, as junior midfielder Luke McCormick was placed on the first team and fifth-year senior defender Kevin Morris, Tekesky and sophomore forward Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi earned second-team honors … three Mountaineers were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Team last week, the most in a single season in program history … fifth-year senior midfielder Pau Jimenez Albelda, Morris and senior defender Aaron Denk Gracia were the honorees … a total of 13 different Mountaineers have scored the club's 32 goals, with Bourlot Jaeggi leading the way with six tallies … what's more, 19 of WVU's 24 field players that have stepped onto the pitch this fall have tallied at least one point … the Mountaineers have been included in at least one poll's top 10 a total of nine weeks this season … coach Dan Stratford is 11-1 in the NCAA Tournament as a head coach, with all 12 matches coming at Division II's Charleston (W.Va.).
 
This Week in Rifle: West Virginia has concluded its fall season.
 
Last Week in Rifle: No. 2 WVU picked up four wins over the weekend, including a quad-match victory on Nov. 14 … the Mountaineers defeated No. 12 Army, 4711-4659, on Nov. 13 … WVU swept both match disciplines, defeating Army by a score of 2340-2304 in smallbore and 2371-2355 in air rifle … in total, nine Mountaineers placed inside the top-10 individuals of the match, including six shooters who tallied an aggregate score of 1175 or better … West Virginia also claimed the top-10 placements in smallbore and eight of the top 10 scores in air rifle … WVU closed out its weekend by shooting a match-high score of 4724 to top No. 6 Air Force (4703), No. 8 Ohio State (4671) and No. 12 Army (4653) in its lone quad match of the season … the Mountaineers swept both match disciplines, showing a smallbore score of 2348 and an air rifle total of 2376 … seven West Virginia shooters placed among the match's top-10 individuals, including freshman Natalie Perrin, who tallied an aggregate total of 1184 to claim first place … the Coopersville, Michigan, native shot a career-high 589 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
 
Notes: WVU is now 9-0 on the season, including 5-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) … West Virginia last opened a season 9-0 in 2019-20, when it finished the regular season with a record of 9-1 after falling to Kentucky in team's final contest … sophomore Molly McGhin leads the Mountaineers in averaged combined score (1182.6) and is No. 6 nationally in the category … McGhin also paces the squad in average air rifle score (595.8) and is No. 6 in the country in the discipline … junior Akihito Shimizu is No. 7 nationally in average air rifle score, with a 595.571 mark … senior Verena Zaisberger leads the Mountaineers in average smallbore score (587.571) and is No. 9 nationally in the category … as a team, West Virginia holds national rankings of No. 1 in average air rifle score (4378.571) and No. 2 in average aggregate score (4723.571) and average smallbore score (2345).
 
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia travels to the NCAA Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, at Apalachee Regional Park, on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 10:20 a.m. ET.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: WVU earned an automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Championships after finishing in second place at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Regionals hosted by Lehigh University, on Nov. 12, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania … junior Ceili McCabe was named the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Regional Champion after registering a 6k time of 20:05.7 … senior Sylvia Russell was behind her, placing 14th, with a time of 20:49.1 … redshirt junior Katherine Dowie followed, ranking 16th in a time of 20:53.2 … redshirt junior Mikaela Lucki finished the race in 20:54.0, good for 17th, and fifth-year senior Hayley Jackson rounded out the Mountaineers in the top 25 after crossing the line in 21:00.4, good for 19th … additionally, sophomore Maria Kaylor finished in 59th in a time of 22:05.2 … senior Charlotte Wood was the next Mountaineer to finish, as she posted a time of 22:55.7, good for 102nd place to round out the Mountaineers' scoring.
 
Notes: McCabe was the second Mountaineer to be named the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champion … previously, Megan Metcalfe won in 2002 … the Mountaineers saw five top-25 finishes and earned five all-region honors, which are the most for the squad since 2019 when Jackson, Candace Archer and McCabe were named to All-Mid-Atlantic Region … McCabe, fifth-year Russell, Dowie, Lucki and Jackson paced the Mountaineers, finishing inside the top 25 … this marks the Mountaineers 12th appearance at Nationals since 1997 … West Virginia collected 67 team points to finish in second place at the regional … Georgetown took the top spot with 43 points, and Villanova followed behind West Virginia in third, with 105 … Princeton (122) and Penn State (159) rounded out the top five … Georgetown and West Virginia earned automatic bids into the 2021 NCAA Championships ... WVU's second-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional is its highest finish since 2016, when the team finished fourth at Penn State's Blue-White Golf Course … the regional race featured 27 teams and 193 runners … it also marked the Mountaineers' second visit to Lehigh's home course this season and their eighth since 2009 … total of 31 teams advanced to the national meet, with 18 automatic bids (top-two teams in each of the nine regions) and 13 at-large bids.

Last Week in Wrestling: For the first time since Jan. 31, 820 fans entered the WVU Coliseum for the West Virginia University wrestling team's home opener against No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday … West Virginia fell to the Sooners by a final score of 28-10 to open Big 12 competition … WVU (0-1, 0-1 Big 12) found themselves down 20-0 midway through the dual as OU (1-0, 1-0 Big 12) recorded five-straight wins, including two major decisions and a pin … sophomore Peyton Hall halted the Sooner's run with a 10-1 major decision over junior Troy Mantanona at 165 pounds …  redshirt sophomores Anthony Carman (184) and Michael Wolfgram (HWT) also earned their first dual victories of the season … Carman blanked redshirt sophomore Carson Berryhill 5-0 at 184 pounds … Wolfgram edged No.17/22 Josh Heindselman for the 3-2 decision … freshman Garett Lautzenheiser made his dual and Coliseum debut, falling to No. 10/9 Anthony Madrigal by an 8-0 major decision.
 
Notes: Redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram recorded a victory over a ranked opponent on Saturday (No. 17/22 Josh Heindselman) … two other Mountaineers grabbed victories in the loss to No. 17 Oklahoma … sophomore Peyton Hall recorded a 10-1 major decision at 165 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Anthony Carman captured the 5-0 shutout at 184 pounds … WVU entered Saturday's contest with two votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll … the Mountaineers currently have six more top-25 ranked  opponents on the schedule … Hall entered dual with Oklahoma ranked No. 14/16 by FloWrestling and InterMat respectively … he ranks in the top 20 all three lists, including No. 14 by FloWrestling and No. 16 by InterMat and WIN Magazine ... the sophomore won the 165-pound crown at the Clarion Open, while WVU took second … redshirt senior Killian Cardinale ranks as high as No. 9 in the FloWrestling rankings, while securing 10th by InterMat and WIN Magazine ... sophomore Michael Wolfgram was named a FloWrestling honorable mention among the heavyweight division, which slots him in the top 25 … after receiving seven votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll to conclude the 2021 season, West Virginia appears in the top 40 of two publications … FloWrestling ranked the Mountaineers 37th, while WIN Magazine put them at 40th … the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are currently scheduled for March 17-19, in Detroit, Michigan for the first time in NCAA history ... it is also the fourth time that the Championships will be held in the state of Michigan, with the last time being in 2007 (Auburn Hills) … additionally, the Big 12 Championship will return to the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the sixth consecutive year on March 5-6.
 
This Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia officially opens its 2021-22 campaign with a trio of home games at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, from Nov. 16-21 … WVU begins its homestand on Tuesday, Nov. 16, against Saint Francis (Pa.) … tipoff against the Red Flash is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers will play host to Kennesaw State on Friday, Nov. 19, at 12 p.m. … West Virginia will cap the week on Sunday, Nov. 21, when the team goes head-to-head with Radford … Sunday's contest against the Highlanders is set for 2 p.m. … all three contests will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

This Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers host the WVU Invitational this weekend, from Nov. 18-20 … West Virginia welcomes Colgate, Old Dominion, St. Bonaventure, William & Mary and Villanova on both the swimming and diving side … while Toledo and Bowling Green travel to Morgantown to compete in the diving competition … the Invite will take place at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park … the invite is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET each day.
