MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU Varsity Club is planning a 10-year reunion for West Virginia University's outstanding 2011 football team that defeated 14
th-ranked Clemson 70-33 in the 2012 Discover Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The reunion will take place the weekend of the Texas game, according to Varsity Club Director
Dale Wolfley.
All former Mountaineer football players planning to attend are encouraged to get in touch with Wolfley or Varsity Club assistant
Kyle Poland by calling (304) 293-9563.
According to Wolfley, a Friday night reception is tentatively being planned at Kegler's Sports Bar & Grill, provided there are no local COVID-19 restrictions.
Wolfley said returning players will also be recognized on the field during the Mountaineers' game against 21
st-ranked Longhorns on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Big 12 Conference has yet to announce a kickoff time and television coverage for the contest.
The Texas game has been designated a True Blue Game, with all fans attending encouraged to wear their blue; also, West Virginia's 2021 seniors will be recognized beforehand.
It was 10 years ago this Jan. 4 when Orange Bowl MVP Geno Smith passed for six touchdowns in a record-breaking performance for the Mountaineers, which finished the season with a 10-3 overall record and a No. 17 ranking in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
Among the most notable bowl records established during that game were total touchdowns (10), combined points in a half (69), total points scored by one team, points in one quarter (35) and points in a half (49).
Smith's six touchdown passes matched the six Iowa's Chuck Long's threw in the 1984 Freedom Bowl, while Tavon Austin's four touchdown catches matched a bowl record set by three others.
Both Smith and Austin are still playing professionally.
Any former WVU student-athletes or administrators wishing to learn more about joining the WVU Varsity Club are encouraged to call Wolfley or Poland at (304) 293-9563.
