MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team checked in at No. 2 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, the organization announced.
The weekly CRCA rankings are based on each team's score from last weekend or the last score recorded a team was idle last week.
TCU checked in as the new No. 1 in the poll, while Alaska-Fairbanks followed behind WVU in third. No. 4 Ole Miss and No. 5 Nebraska rounded out the latest top five.
Along with West Virginia, Ole Miss and Nebraska, the other six members of the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) also were featured in the poll, including No. 7 Navy, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Army, No. 11 NC State, No. 12 Akron and No. 16 Memphis.
West Virginia defeated then-No. 6 Memphis, 4718-4622, on Oct. 10, at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown. WVU swept Memphis in both disciplines, claiming smallbore, 2341-2279, and air rifle, 2377-2343. Last week's win over the Tigers was the Mountaineers' third win over a top-10 opponent this season. Nine WVU shooters placed inside the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, including each of the top-eight spots. Additionally, West Virginia took the top-nine placements on the individual smallbore standings and placed eight shooters inside the top 10 on the individual, air rifle leaderboard.
Next up, West Virginia travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday, Oct. 17, to square off against No. 17 NC State. Sunday's contest against the Wolfpack is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. ET, inside the James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum.
