Goetz Wins WPGA Open Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior Mark Goetz of the West Virginia University golf team won the 117th Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Open Championship at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.
Goetz shot a two-day total of 64-67=131 for 11-under on the par-71, 6,457-yard course. In Wednesday's final round, the Greensburg, Pa., native carded an eagle on the opening hole, as well as eight birdies to take home the championship title.
"Mark has meant so much to our program these past three seasons," Mountaineer coach Sean Covich said. "He's a great teammate and has developed into a leader for us. I am so happy for him because I know how much this tournament means to him."
After the first day of competition, Goetz sat in second place with a 64, behind Daniel Obremski who shot a 62. The pair remained close throughout the final round on Wednesday, but Goetz solidified the victory with a birdie on the 18th hole, shooting a four-under-par 67.
The win is Goetz's first Western Pennsylvania Open victory of his career. He is set to return to WVU this fall for his redshirt junior season, after appearing in the Mountaineer lineup seven times in 2019-20.
