MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Rex Sunahara signed a rookie free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins last weekend, the organization announced.
Sunahara was West Virginia's regular long snapper for punts, field goals and extra points for the past two seasons. He appeared in 25 total games during his three-year WVU career after transferring from Rhode Island.
The Bay Village, Ohio, resident was invited to play in the NFLPA and Hula Bowl All-Star Games and was a 2019 finalist for the Patrick Mannelly Award presented to college football's top long snapper.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Sunahara was signed to help handle Miami's long snapping duties during training camp while Blake Ferguson was on the team's COVID-19 reserve list.
Ferguson, a sixth round draft pick from LSU, has since posted a negative test and has been reactivated.
Rex is the son of West Virginia University volleyball coach Reed Sunahara.
