Mountaineers Named GCAA All-Academic Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team was named an All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), as announced by the GCAA on Thursday.
The Mountaineers earned the recognition for the fourth consecutive season after posting a 3.46 team grade-point average (GPA) for the 2019-20 season. Six student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or better, while senior Philipp Matlari and sophomore Kurtis Grant posted perfect 4.0's in the fall and Grant earned a second 4.0 in the spring term.
"I am very proud of every single player for earning this honor for our program," Mountaineer coach Sean Covich said. "This takes a commitment from every player, and I am so proud of them for making this a priority.
"Also, we have to thank our academic advisor Stephanie White who works every day to make sure our guys are doing what they need to do. From study hall, tutoring, communicating with their professors and staying current with their studies, she is a big reason our guys have success in the classroom."
Each year, the GCAA recognizes collegiate golf teams who have earned a 3.0 or higher team GPA for both the fall and spring semesters.
In June, a trio of Mountaineers were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the GCAA. Senior Etienne Papineau and Matlari were honored for the second consecutive season, while Grant earned the honor for the first time in his career. To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America status in Division I, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically with a stroke average under 76.0, as well as maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. For 2019-20 only, they must participate in 40 percent of the team's competitive rounds.
