MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Work on the replacement of the lower-level seating inside the WVU Coliseum is nearing completion, according to April Messerly, associate athletics director for facilities and operations.
"They are now beginning to remove some of the upper seating and telescopic work is on-going," Messerly said Wednesday morning.
All 14,000 seats in the 50-year-old arena will be replaced by the end of the summer, thanks to a contribution made by Ken and Jennifer Mason of Alma, West Virginia, to the Climbing Higher Campaign.
When the project is finished, the new seats with a darker shade of blue will match the current color scheme in the arena. Each new seat will also have a cup holder.
"They look really sharp," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.
Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Irwin Seating Company is doing the project.
Along with new seating, the athletics department is upgrading the Coliseum's sound and lighting systems in conjuction with the replacement of the video and ribbon boards.
An announcement on those projects is forthcoming.
