West Virginia Falls to No. 6 Texas in Austin

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team suffered its second loss of the season on Friday evening, as the Mountaineers fell to Texas, 6-1, at the Texas Tennis Center, in Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) quickly gained the advantage in doubles play, as the Mountaineers (7-2, 0-2 Big 12) lost the No. 3 match by a score of 6-0. The duo of junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman Kat Lyman kept their match close in the No. 1 slot, but UT's Fernanda Labrana and Marta Perez Mur ultimately won the contest, 6-4, to claim the doubles team point. The final No. 2 match went unfinished.
Despite an early deficit, West Virginia opened singles play with an impressive performance from sophomore Nicole Roc in the No. 6 slot. Roc defeated Gabby Cusano in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to even the match at 1-1.
Texas retook the lead after winning in the No. 3 slot, after Lyman suffered the defeat against Adri Nagy in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Longhorns then secured a win in the No. 1 position, as sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia fell to No. 14 Bianca Turati, 6-0, 6-1.
With UT in the lead by two, the Mountaineers battled in the No. 2 match, as Courteau went head to head with Labrana. WVU lost in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, as Texas claimed its fourth team point to clinch the match. The remaining matches were played out.
The Mountaineers dropped the final two singles matches of the evening, as Texas emerged victorious.
West Virginia continues Big 12 Conference play tomorrow at the Hurd Tennis Center, in Waco, Texas, as WVU gets set to square off against No. 27 Baylor. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
