Matlari Third as WVU Concludes Play at Seminole Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Philipp Matlari earned a third-place finish, while the West Virginia University golf team tied for seventh at the Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State, in Tallahassee, Florida, on Sunday.
Matlari posted four birdies and just one bogey in the final round of play to finish with a three-under 69 on the par-72, 6,695-yard Golden Eagle Country Club Course. The Liemen, Germany, native finished in third place on the individual leaderboard with a final score of 73-71-69=213 (-3) to give WVU a top-five finish at two consecutive events. Additionally, Matlari's third-place finish is his top individual placement of the season.
The No. 47 Mountaineers recorded a four-over 292 in the third and final round of play on Sunday. West Virginia carded a three-round total of 299-292-292=883 to finish the tournament at 19-over and tie for seventh place with No. 32 North Florida.
No. 17 Washington went home with the team title, posting a total score of 289-288-278=855 to finish nine-under par. No. 25 East Tennessee State was the runner-up at two-under (862).
"Philipp was outstanding for us this week," WVU coach Sean Covich said. "His game has really improved, and he is playing with a lot of confidence, which is fun to watch. For whatever reason, we just didn't play our best as a team this weekend. I have to do a better job preparing our guys and getting them ready to go. Luckily, we have a few weeks off at home, then we'll travel to South Carolina for spring break practice."
Junior Logan Perkins was the second Mountaineer finisher, as he tied for 23rd place after shooting 75-73-72=220 for four-over on the weekend. Senior Etienne Papineau was just behind Perkins in a tie for 30th. Papineau completed the tournament with scores of 76-73-74=223 to go seven-over par.
Rounding out the Mountaineers' scoring and finishing in a tie for 53rd was junior Matthew Sharpstene. After shooting a 77 in the third round, Sharpstene carded a final score of 76-75-77=228 for 12-over. Also competeing for West Virginia was junior Mark Goetz, who posted a three-round total of 75-76-86=237 to finish 21-over and tied for 70th.
After a month away from competition, the Mountaineers return to action for The Hootie at Bulls Bay from Mar. 22-24, in Awendaw, South Carolina. The annual tournament is set to take place at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.
