
Mountaineers Hold Steady in Road to Nationals Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team sits just outside the top 25 on a pair of charts in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (6-6, 0-2 Big 12) rank as high as No. 27 on uneven bars (48.821 avg.) and floor exercise (48.988 avg.). WVU also is tied at No. 33 on vault (48.788 avg.) and No. 35 on balance beam (48.629 avg.).
Overall, West Virginia moves up one spot to No. 28 with a 195.225 season average.
Individually, freshman Kianna Yancey continues to rank inside the top 50 in the all-around and is tied at No. 38 with a season average of 39.15.
Regionally, the Mountaineers move up one spot to No. 4 in the Southeast. WVU ranks No. 4 on bars and No. 5 on vault, beam and floor.
Kianna Yancey owns four top-25 regional rankings. She comes in at No. 4 in the all-around, her highest event ranking, and ranks No. 7 on bars (9.825 avg.) and No. 20 on vault (9.792 avg.). Kianna Yancey also is tied at No. 19 on floor (9.825 avg.).
Sophomore Esperanza Abarca follows Kianna Yancey in the bars rankings at No. 13 with a season average of 9.779. Freshman Kayla Yancey sits in a three-way tie at No. 19 (9.754 avg.), while sophomore Kendra Combs ranks No. 22 with a 9.75 season average.
Senior Julia Merwin paces the Mountaineers' vault lineup and ranks No. 15 regionally (9.808 avg.), followed by freshman Abbie Pierson at No. 17 (9.806 avg.).
Senior Abby Kaufman also ranks No. 12 in the all-around (38.725 avg.) and No. 23 on beam (9.742 avg.).
WVU continues to rank No. 4 overall in the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers also sit at No. 4 in all four events.

Reigning National Champion Oklahoma ranks No. 1 this week with a 197.859 season average. Florida (197.688 avg.) is No. 2, and Utah and UCLA are tied at No. 3 (197.071 avg.). Denver (197.054 avg.) rounds out the top five.
LSU (196.925 avg.) sits at No. 6, Minnesota (196.879 avg.) follows at No. 7 and Alabama (196.825 avg.) ranks No. 8. Michigan (196.813 avg.) comes in at No. 9, and California completes the top 10 with a 196.607 season average.
The Mountaineers will compete twice in three days this week. First up, West Virginia travels to Pittsburgh for a dual meet at Pitt (5-4, 2-3 EAGL) on Friday, Feb. 21, with action inside Fitzgerald Field House set to begin at 7 p.m.
WVU concludes its weekend back home at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. Sunday's meet is Beauty and the Beast. The WVU gymnastics team will compete against Western Michigan (5-4, 4-0 MAC), Bowling Green (5-5, 0-3 MAC) and Towson (6-3, 1-3 EAGL), while the wrestling team will grapple with Utah Valley simultaneously.
The second-ever Mountaineer Fan Festival also will be held Sunday prior to the start of competition, with the Coliseum Gold Gate opening at 12 p.m. A fan meet-and-greet on the Coliseum concourse will cap the day's events. Additionally, the first 500 Mountaineer Maniac students in attendance will receive free pizza and a giveaway item. Sunday also features special appearances by Mr. Twister, the face-painting and balloon animal artist, and Musket, the Mountaineer Kids Club's mascot. MKC members can pick up their t-shirts the day of the event.
One ticket gains fans admittance into Mountaineer Fan Fest and the Beauty and the Beast competition. Tickets are on sale now at WVUGAME.com and also will be available for purchase at the WVU Coliseum Gold Gate Ticket Office.
