Mountaineers Maintain Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team sits just outside the top 25 on a pair of charts in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (5-5, 0-1 Big 12) rank as high as No. 27 on uneven bars (48.805 avg.) and No. 28 on floor exercise (48.94 avg.). WVU also moves up one spot to No. 33 on vault (48.765 avg.) and continues to rank No. 35 on balance beam (48.645 avg.).
Overall, West Virginia did not crack the top 25 this week, dropping three spots to No. 29 with a 195.155 season average.
Individually, freshman Kianna Yancey continues to rank inside the top 50 in the all-around and is tied at No. 39 with a season average of 39.15.
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 5 in the Southeast. WVU ranks No. 4 on bars, No. 5 on beam and floor and No. 6 on vault.
Kianna Yancey owns four top-25 regional rankings. She comes in at No. 4 in the all-around, her highest event ranking, and is tied at No. 6 on bars (9.83 avg.) and No. 20 on floor (9.817 avg.). She also ranks No. 20 on vault (9.79 avg.).
Sophomore Esperanza Abarca follows Kianna Yancey in the bars rankings and is tied at No. 16 with a season average of 9.775. Sophomore Kendra Combs and freshman Kayla Yancey are tied at No. 23 with matching 9.75 season averages.
Senior Julia Merwin and freshman Abbie Pierson pace the Mountaineers' vault lineup and is tied at No. 15 regionally (9.8 avg.). Senior Abby Kaufman also ranks No. 22 (9.781 avg.).
On beam, Kaufman is tied at No. 20 with a 9.75 season average, while junior McKenna Linnen comes in at No. 23 with a 9.74 average.
Kaufman also ranks No. 10 in the all-around (38.725 avg.).
WVU continues to rank No. 4 overall in the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers also sit at No. 4 in all four events.
Kianna Yancey owns the team's top conference ranking and ranks No. 7 in the all-around, followed by Kaufman at No. 8. Kianna Yancey also ranks No. 8 on floor.
Reigning National Champion Oklahoma, West Virginia's next opponent, ranks No. 1 this week with a 197.782 season average. Florida (197.650 avg.) is No. 2, and Utah (197.065 avg.) follows at No. 3. UCLA (197.050 avg.) ranks No. 4, while Denver (196.992 avg.) rounds out the top five.
Alabama (196.865 avg.) sits at No. 6, Michigan (196.815 avg.) follows at No. 7 and Minnesota (196.775 avg.) ranks No. 8. LSU (196.671 avg.) comes in at No. 9, and California completes the top 10 with a 196.521 season average.
West Virginia will conclude a three-week swing away from Morgantown with a tri-meet at No. 1 Oklahoma (11-0, 1-0 Big 12), with Texas Woman's University (4-5, 0-0 MIC), on Friday, Feb. 14. Action is set to begin at 7:45 p.m. ET, inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
