December 07, 2020 04:00 PM | Men's Basketball, Blog
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia jumped five spots to No. 10 in this week's USA Today Coaches' Poll, released earlier today.
The Mountaineers (4-1) were ranked No. 15 to begin the season. The coaches did not release a poll last week.
Meanwhile, West Virginia held steady at No. 11 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll after a 1-1 week that saw WVU lose 87-82 to top-ranked Gonzaga in Indianapolis as part of the Jimmy V Classic, and then rally in the second half to defeat Georgetown 80-71 in a Big 12-Big East Battle on Sunday in Washington, D.C.
Against the Hoyas, sophomore guard Deuce McBride led a balanced Mountaineer attack with 17 points. He also contributed seven rebounds, handed out seven assists and made four steals in an outstanding all-around performance.
Junior forward Derek Culver finished with 14 points and nine rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes because of early foul trouble. Culver continues to lead West Virginia in scoring (15.4) and rebounding (10.4) through five games this season.
Junior forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. gave West Virginia a big boost with 13 points and four rebounds against Georgetown. Matthews had a couple of dunks in the second half that helped key West Virginia's comeback victory.
West Virginia has another busy week ahead of it with games on Wednesday night at the WVU Coliseum against Robert Morris and a Sunday meeting against 19th-ranked Richmond, which is resuming play today against Wofford after pausing because of COVID-19 concerns within its program.
The Spiders are off to an impressive 2-0 start with wins over Morehead State and Kentucky.
Robert Morris (1-0) has played just once this season against Point Park University, defeating the Pioneers 75-57 two days ago. The Colonials' other game scheduled for last Wednesday against Florida Gulf Coast was canceled.
The Big 12 has five teams in this week's AP Poll, led by undefeated Baylor at No. 2. Kansas checks in at No. 5, followed by West Virginia at 11, Texas, which is tied with Wisconsin at No. 13, and Texas Tech at No. 17.
Big 12 play began yesterday with Oklahoma holding on to defeat TCU 82-78.
The Mountaineers will tip off Big 12 play on Friday, Dec. 18 at home against Iowa State.
No fans will be permitted to attend that game as the University, in coordination with local and state officials, announced last week that there will be no fans for men's and women's basketball games during the month of December.
