MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Mark Goetz picked up two victories to lead the West Virginia University golf team in the first day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
In the morning session, top-seeded Oklahoma defeated West Virginia, 5-1-0. WVU's victory in the match came from Goetz, who never trailed in his match and secured a victory over Thomas Johnson. Leading by two with two holes to play, Goetz secured a birdie on the 17th hole to win 3&1.
In the afternoon session, the Mountaineers picked up two victories but fell to TCU, 3-2-1. Against the Horned Frogs, Goetz never trailed once again and defeated Spencer Ball, 3&1. Junior Logan Perkins picked up his first victory of the tournament with a win over Aymeric Laussot, 4&2. Perkins also never trailed in his match against Laussot. Freshman Jackson Davenport was down one going into the final hole against Gustav Frimodt. Davenport won the hole to tie his match.
"I thought Mark (Goetz) played outstanding all day, going undefeated versus Oklahoma and TCU," coach Sean Covich said. "Logan (Perkins) had a hard-fought match against one of the top 25 amateurs in the world, and then he played well again in the afternoon to pick up a win.
"The rest of the guys struggled in the morning but true freshmen Jackson Davenport and Will Stakel really grew up a lot in the afternoon match. I was impressed by how they handled themselves. We are looking forward to some more matches on Saturday."
Day two of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament begins Saturday morning. In the morning session, the Mountaineers will square off against No. 9 Iowa State before taking on No. 5 Baylor in the afternoon session. Results will be available at Golfstat.com.
