Mountaineers Rank No. 24

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After sitting just outside the top 25 last week, the West Virginia University gymnastics team jumps back into the Road to Nationals Rankings at No. 24.
This week's rankings are based on a season average, with WVU (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) showing a 195.283 average following a season-best 196.025 score earned in the Mountaineers' home season opener on Jan. 26. WVU placed first overall, topping New Hampshire (195.125) and Temple (191.925) in the tri-meet, who finished second and third, respectively.
WVU also is nationally ranked No. 18 on floor (49.017 avg.) and No. 24 on balance beam (48.8 avg.). The Mountaineers' floor lineup checks into the national rankings for the first time this season, while the beam lineup remains in the top 25 for the third consecutive week. West Virginia sits just outside the top 25 on uneven bars at No. 27 (48.775 avg.). WVU also ranks No. 37 on vault (48.692 avg.).
Individually, freshman Abbie Pierson remains ranked at No. 4 on vault following her 9.9 score in her collegiate debut on Jan. 11. Classmate Kianna Yancey owns a pair of top-50 rankings, checking in at No. 33 in the all-around (39.15 avg.) and No. 44 on bars (9.85 avg.).
The Mountaineers maintained their No. 4 ranking in the Southeast Region. The squad sits at No. 3 on bars, beam and floor and ranks No. 6 on vault.
Kianna Yancey owns four regional rankings. The Hatfield, Pennsylvania, native paces the Mountaineers on bars (9.85 avg.) and the all-around (39.15 avg.), ranking No. 4 in each event. She also ranks No. 14 on floor (9.838 avg.) and is tied at No. 20 on vault (9.783 avg.).
Sophomore Esperanza Abarca follows Kianna Yancey in the bars rankings and is tied at No. 17 (9.767 avg.). Freshman Kayla Yancey is tied at No. 24 with a season average of 9.733.
Pierson paces the beam lineup and is tied at No. 10 regionally (9.825 avg.). Junior McKenna Linnen is tied at No. 20 (9.758 avg.), and senior Abby Kaufman and Abarca are tied at No. 22 with matching 9.75 season averages.
On floor, senior Chloe Cluchey is tied at No. 10 with a 9.858 average. Classmate Erica Fontaine is tied at No. 20 (9.8 avg.).
Senior Julia Merwin paces the vault lineup and is tied at No. 15 regionally (9.8 avg.). Kaufman checks-in at No. 25 (9.75 avg.). Kaufman also ranks No. 9 in the all-around (38.725 avg.).
WVU continues to rank No. 4 overall in the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers sit at No. 3 in the floor rankings and checks-in at No. 4 on vault, bars and beam.
Pierson owns the team's top conference ranking and ranks No. 2 on vault. Cluchey ranks No. 8 on floor, followed by Kianna Yancey at No. 9. Kianna Yancey also ranks No. 6 in the all-around and is tied at No. 10 on bars.
Reigning National Champion Oklahoma ranks No. 1 nationally with a 197.795 season average. Florida (197.525 avg.) is No. 2, and UCLA (196.933 avg.) follows at No. 3. Utah (196.825) ranks No. 4, while Denver (196.819) rounds out the top five.
LSU (196.700 avg.) sits at No. 6, and Alabama comes in at No. 7 with a 196.667 season average. Minnesota and Michigan are tied at No. 8 (196.550 avg.), while California (196.388 avg.) rounds out the top 10.
Looking ahead, West Virginia hits the road once again, as a trip to Washington, D.C., on Friday, Jan. 31, pits the Mountaineers against host George Washington and William & Mary. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET, inside the Charles E. Smith Center.
