MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Chloe Cluchey of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named the Big 12 Conference Event Specialist of the Week.
Cluchey's honor is the first of the season for a WVU gymnast and her second career event specialist recognition. The Woodbridge, Virginia, native, who also was named WVU's Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, was previously honored by the Big 12 on March 12, 2018.
The award follows Cluchey's performances in the Mountaineers' home opener on Sunday, where she tallied a pair of first-place victories on floor exercise and vault.
Cluchey matched her career-high score of 9.925 on floor to earn the victory outright. She has won the event title in two-of-three meets this season, scoring below a 9.85 just once. Cluchey currently ranks No. 55 nationally on floor with a 9.858 season average.
In addition to her floor victory on Sunday, Cluchey finished in a three-way tie for first on vault with a season-best 9.8. She also tied for 10th overall on uneven bars with a 9.675 total.
The senior's performance helped the Mountaineers to a season-high 196.025 team score. The Mountaineers swept their competition, as New Hampshire finished second (195.125) and Temple finished third (191.925).
Denver's Maddie Karr shared the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honor with Oklahoma's Anastasia Webb. OU's Vanessa Deniz earned the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award.
Looking ahead, West Virginia hits the road once again, as a trip to Washington, D.C., on Friday, Jan. 31, pits the Mountaineers against host George Washington and William & Mary. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET, inside the Charles E. Smith Center.
