Mountaineer Beam Lineup Nationally Ranked

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will open its 2020 home season nationally ranked on one event, with the Mountaineers' balance beam lineup ranking at No. 22 in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
WVU earned its event ranking based on a season average of 48.825.
Ranked No. 24 in last week's rankings, the Mountaineers fell to No. 27 (194.913 avg.) following a 194.500-195.800 loss at then-No. 12 Iowa State on Jan. 17.
Reigning National Champion Oklahoma ranks No. 1 this week with a 197.758 season average. Florida (197.100 avg.) is No. 2, and UCLA (196.933 avg.) follows at No. 3. Denver (196.900 avg.) ranks No. 4, while Utah and Alabama are tied at No. 5 (196.713 avg.).
Minnesota (196.675 avg.) sits at No. 7, LSU (196.342 avg.) follows at No. 8 and Michigan (196.175 avg.) ranks No. 9. California rounds out the top 10 with a 196.158 season average.
Individually, freshman Abbie Pierson remains tied at No. 4 nationally on vault, as she posted a 9.9 score in her collegiate debut on Jan. 11.
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 4 in the Southeast Region. The team sits as high as No. 3 on uneven bars (48.713 avg.) and also ranks No. 5 on beam (48.825 avg.), No. 6 on floor exercise (48.788 avg.) and No. 7 on vault (48.588 avg.).
Pierson paces the Mountaineers' vault lineup and is ranked No. 1 regionally. She also is tied for No. 10 on beam (9.825 avg.) and No. 25 on floor (9.75 avg.). Freshman Kianna Yancey also ranks inside the top 25 on three events. She sits at No. 4 on bars (9.838 avg.) and is tied at No. 16 on vault (9.787 avg.) and No. 18 on floor (9.8 avg.).
Senior Chloe Cluchey is tied at No. 15 on floor (9.825 avg.), followed by classmate Erica Fontaine, who is tied at No. 25 (9.75 avg.). Junior McKenna Linnen ranks No. 21 on beam (9.775 avg.), and freshman Kayla Yancey is tied at No. 22 on bars (9.738 avg.). Additionally, senior Abby Kaufman is tied at No. 24 on vault (9.75 avg.), rounding out the Mountaineers in the top 25 regionally.
The Mountaineers again rank No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference and checks in at No. 4 on each event. Pierson is tied at No. 2 on vault with Denver's Maddie Karr. Cluchey ranks No. 8 on floor, followed by Kianna at No. 10.
West Virginia (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) opens its home season on Sunday, Jan. 26, with a tri-meet against New Hampshire (2-1, 1-0 EAGL) and Temple (2-2, 0-0 ECAC), starting at 2 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers' home opener is Daddy-Daughter Day, as well as Dollar Day, and all tickets and select concessions will be available for just $1 each. It's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and MKC members can pick up their t-shirts at the meet.
Sunday also features special appearances by Mr. Twister, the face-painting and balloon animal artist, and Musket, the Mountaineer Kids Club's mascot. Additionally, Mountaineer Maniac students will receive free fan gloves prior to the meet.
