Mountaineers Rank No. 24

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team debuts at No. 24 in the second Road to Nationals Rankings of the 2020 season.
WVU's ranking is based on its 195.325 score earned in the team's season-opening meet at Penn State on Jan. 11. Despite the loss, the Mountaineers recorded their highest season-opening meet score in program history and posted a trio of first-place event finishes.
West Virginia also ranks No. 20 on balance beam (48.925), No. 23 on vault (48.900), No. 24 on uneven bars (48.750) and No. 31 on floor exercise (48.750).
All but Georgia competed for the first time in the Southeast Region last week. WVU ranks No. 4 overall and sits 0.300 points behind the Bulldogs, who rank No. 3 and hold an average score of 195.625.
Additionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 4 overall on each event but floor exercise (No. 3) in the Big 12 Conference.
Individually, freshman Abbie Pierson, who was named WVU's co-Student-Athlete of the Week, owns two top-50 national rankings. Following her winning, 9.9 scores on vault and balance beam at Penn State, the New Kensington, Pennsylvania, native is tied at No. 4 and No. 14, respectively.
Additionally, freshman Kianna Yancey is tied at No. 27 in the uneven bars rankings after posting a 9.850 score in her collegiate debut, and senior Chloe Cluchey is tied at No. 49 following a team-best 9.850 showing on floor exercise.
Regionally, four Mountaineers are ranked in the top six in every event this week. Pierson is tied with North Carolina's Khazia Hislop for the No. 1 ranking on vault. She also ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma's Maggie Nichols (9.912).
Looking ahead, West Virginia (0-1) remains on the road this week, flying west to Ames, Iowa, for its first Big 12 meet of the season against No. 12 Iowa State (2-1) on Friday, Jan. 17. The meet is schedule to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, inside the Hilton Coliseum.
