Last week, nine outstanding contributors were announced by WVU director of athletics
Shane Lyons for this year's WVU Sports Hall of Fame class, the 29
thgroup to be inducted on September 14 prior to West Virginia's football game against NC State at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Â
One of the nine was tremendous power forward Darryl Prue, who helped Gale Catlett's Mountaineer basketball program to three NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986, 1987 and 1989, the Washington, D.C., native earning first team All-Atlantic 10 honors during his senior season in '89.
Â
That year, West Virginia ran off a nation-best 22-game winning streak and won the Atlantic 10 regular season title before getting upset by Penn State in the A-10 tournament quarterfinals.
Â
WVU recovered to rout Tennessee in an NCAA Tournament first round game and had Duke on the ropes in the second round in Greensboro, North Carolina, before the whistle turned against the Mountaineers.
Â
Darryl, now the head boy's basketball coach at TC Williams High in Alexandria, Virginia, recalls that game and more from his outstanding four-year career during a phone conversation we had earlier this week.Â
