MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene was named to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America over the weekend.
Sharpstene is the first Mountaineer to earn the honor since the reintroduction of the sport and is believed to be the first West Virginia player in program history to earn PING All-Region honors. WVU discontinued the program in 1982, and it was reinstated as a varsity sport for the 2015-16 season.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Sharpstene led the team with a 70.73 scoring average this season. He posted eight top-15 finishes on the year, including four top-10 finishes. After taking 13th place at the 2019 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, Sharpstene led West Virginia to its first NCAA appearance since 1947. He helped the team take sixth place at the NCAA Louisville Regional earlier this month.
Sharpstene's 2018-19 scoring average is a program record, while his No. 72 ranking rates as the best end-of-season ranking in program history. His 20 rounds of par-or-better sit atop the program rankings in the new era, while his 32 counting scores this season rank second in the record books.
